Joggers should exercise caution

Before Ron Haigis completed two Flying Pig marathons beyond the age of 60, he was quite the gardener. In 15 pools of water on his Cold Spring, Ky., property he grew 31 varieties of water-lilies that he sold across the tri-state.

Among his loyal buyers was Nancy Prosser, who one day brought her husband - Xavier basketball coach Skip Prosser.

"He said, 'I'm not interested in water-lilies. I'm just interested in recruiting basketball players,' " said Haigis, now 64. "But I ran into him a couple more times and he was a nice fella."

In 2005, Haigis began jogging in preparation for marathons, hoping to improve his health. He didn't want to end up like his four brothers, who had all endured open-heart surgeries.

That's makes Skip Prosser's death following a jog Thursday all the more surprising.

A wave of ordinances aim to muffle motorcycles

MILWAUKEE | Cities from New York to Denver are giving motorcyclists the silent treatment.

That worries riders-rights groups, which fear that a wave of ordinances aimed at muffling Harley-Davidsons, hushing Hondas and stifling Suzukis will create a confusing patchwork of laws that motorcyclists won't be able to navigate.

The motorcycle industry is concerned that it could turn these frustrated riders away.

"From our perspective, this creates enormous problems for us, because people notice the one motorcycle that makes a lot of noise," said Bill Wood, spokesman for the American Motorcyclist Association. "They don't notice the 50 that pass that don't. So there's a perception that motorcycles are noisy."

Ordinances come in many forms. Some are against certain types of products — such as mufflers that would rattle the apples off of trees — while others are aimed more on the intent of the driver, who may want to turn some heads or rile up the neighbors on a Sunday afternoon.

1992 Nissan Maxima SE review from North America

Transmission went after having it for a month, that was my fault though.

Clock never really worked.

Auto Climate control light was dim sometimes.

Blower Motor.

Wheel bearing.

ABS light was always on, but that didn't matter to me.

Daytime lights, and High-beams would switch to only one light at times whenever it wanted.

The worst thing was the door-lock alarm sensor in the driver's door. Key would often times not de-activate the factory alarm and I would have to run to the trunk or passenger door and unlock with the key to shut the alarm off.

VTC tick.

Exhaust manifold stud broke.

2 Window regulators.

Fuel Pump.

New bridge near North High opens today

I thought it was going to be a nightmare," Kinnear said Tuesday.

Instead, the bridge closure, which ends today, has proven a nice break from the jaywalking, traffic and speeding concerns that have been chronic problems during Kinnear's 15 years at North High.

"It's been wonderful," he said. "There's hardly any traffic, so it's been really exceptionally safe."

Caltrans, which demolished the old bridge in November 2005, plans to open the new one this afternoon, after a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the morning. The new bridge is part of the ongoing renovation of the 60 /91 /215 interchange, which also includes wider bridges, new underpasses and truck-only bypass lanes, that is scheduled for completion next spring.

The bridge widening was required as part of the widening of Interstate 215/Highway 60 between Moreno Valley and Riverside, Caltrans spokeswoman Terese Lagana said.

Plug-in hybrids? Yes, no, maybe

The Japanese maker says plug-ins may turn out to be no more environmentally friendly than the current crop of petrol-electric hybrid vehicles, because the household electricity they recharge from is produced by burning fossil fuels.

But Toyota's lack of enthusiasm for plug-ins may have something to do with reports the maker is having trouble developing a reliable lithium-ion battery for its next generation of hybrid vehicles.

Lithium-ion batteries, already used in laptops, are cheaper, more powerful and last longer than conventional nickel-metal hydride batteries but are prone to overheating.

Toyota is said to be struggling with the technology. Meanwhile, General Motors says it will have batteries ready for installation in prototypes by October.

Toyota recently began public road tests of a plug-in hybrid in Japan, using a nickel-metal hydride battery.
