Area pools are reporting an upward surge in business as one of the best ways to stay cool is by getting wet.The National Weather Service lifted its excessive heat warning Thursday evening, but has issued an excessive heat watch that starts Sunday and runs through Wednesday."Temperatures today will be in the mid 90s," said Butch Dye, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in St. Louis. "The humidity has fallen somewhat and that’s what led to the warning being canceled. However, beginning on Sunday the humidity will climb once again as we are expecting a high of 101 and heat indices near 110. DANVILLE - Most anyone can visit Triangle Cycles North on Riverside Drive and purchase the same model bike as six-time American Motorcyclist Association Superbike champion Mat Mladin or reigning champ Ben Spies. The difference between the bikes they are riding this weekend during the Big Kahuna Nationals at Virginia International Raceway and one off the local showroom floor? Plenty. And the whole key is more horsepower and more acceleration, according to Tom Houseworth, the crew chief who works on Spies' heavily-modified Suzuki GSX-R1000. "Our bikes all start out as something similar to what you can buy in your local store," Mladin said. "With the right people working on it, you really can get a motorcycle that will be very close to what guys race on the racetrack. It's pretty amazing, actually." While AMA features a Superstock racing class where bikes are only lightly modified, the big show is the Superbike division, where significant alterations are made to the motorcycle's chassis and engine.

DEAR DOCTOR: I own a 1999 Dodge pickup 5.9-liter V-8. I installed a set of exhaust headers and noticed the driver's side header would glow in the dark. I used a heat thermal gun, and the temperature ranged from 640-720 degrees. The passenger side header temperature ranged 440-520 degrees. A trip to the dealer indicated a lazy oxygen sensor. It was replaced, but made no difference. What would cause the difference in temperature? I am also burning out spark plug wires. .

After a decade in which the amount of private loans exploded, consumer advocates say families should first make sure they've exhausted federal loan options and financial aid and payment plans from their school before they take out private loans. Families took out $17.3 billion in private loans in 2005, up from $4.5 billion in 2000, said Sandy Baum, a senior policy analyst at the College Board and a professor of economics at Skidmore Collage.
