But if anyone decided they didn't need to be weighed Monday before the football team's two-a-day practices began, swift discipline was waiting for them. Gauging a player's hydration, or lack thereof, with weigh-ins before and after each practice is a widely applied precaution at area high schools, considering temperatures regularly eclipse triple digits in the Southern California desert. When Etiwanda trainer Oscar Coracero implemented the weighing system two years ago, a football player lost seven pounds during one two-hour morning practice. When he returned for the afternoon session having not heeded Coracero's instructions to rehydrate, he was restricted to the sidelines.
Teen's death too much to bear
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- His ribs cracked and his spine fractured, 16-year-old Tommy Barclay couldn't stop asking about his girl friend from his hospital bed yesterday. But Barclay's family didn't think he was ready to learn that Michelle Arout, 17, died in the brutal two-car wreck in Charleston that left Barclay in critical condition and forever changed the lives of five of his friends. Barclay might become hysterical, they worried, imperiling his recovery. "He asked my sister for the cell phone to call her," said his aunt, Laura Feliciano. "I don't know how we're going to tell him." Police are still investigating Monday night's fatal wreck during a high-speed race and sources said they expect one or both drivers will face serious criminal charges.

Georgia Contractors Cut Costs by Going "Green" with Use of New Emissions Technology
Southern Drilling, a Georgia-based provider of heavy drilling equipment for mining operations, water wells and mineral exploration has been instrumental in reducing diesel fuel consumption and pollution in the state for the last five years. Southern Drilling is the exclusive distributor in Georgia of Emissions Technology, Inc.'s Combustion Catalyst Systems (CCS) that reduces harmful pollutants in stationary diesel engines by 50 percent and lowers fuel consumption 15 - 20 percent. "At first I thought it was pure snake oil," says John Yongue, president of Southern Drilling. "After I tried it on a diesel drilling rig, I quickly became a believer." Now, 200 installations later, Yongue is still a firm believer in the product, and he is making new believers with each new installation.

It is known as the plant that ate the South. Now kudzu, a rapidly growing invasive vine that blankets the landscape in parts of the southern United States, is heading north toward Canada. "It is on the move," said Rowan Sage, a professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Toronto. "It will grow over your house if you don't keep it under control." Also known as the cancer of the vegetative world, kudzu suppresses and kills other plants, including tree seedlings and native plants. It can grow two metres a week in all directions, quickly covering abandoned cars, tractors, houses and even traffic tunnels. .
