3 teens charged in robbery on south side of DM

Three teenagers were taken into custody following a robbery on the south side of Des Moines early this morning.

Jack Petsche, 17, and Nicholas Ceretti, 18, both of Des Moines, are charged with robbery. Brandon Beechum, 17, of Des Moines, is charged with being an accessory after the fact for allegedly providing an additional set of clothes for Petsche after hold-up.

It was Petsche who went inside the Kum & Go Store at 4001 S.W. Ninth St., with a knife and a shirt pulled over his head with eye holes cut in the cloth, police said. Ceretti is accused of being the the driver.

The robbery occurred about 1:40 a.m.

A witness gave police a description of the get-away car after the robber left the building with less than $100 in cash. Officers stopped the vehicle shortly thereafter and took the suspects down to the police station for questioning.

Wii + Second Life = New Training Simulator

MIT research fellow David E. Stone. In fact, he claims the motion-sensitive controller is "one of the most significant technology breakthroughs in the history of computer science." Say what?

For Stone, the Wiimote is the key to building realistic training simulators within the virtual world of Second Life. He is helping companies and universities do that through his WorldWired consultancy. Clients include a company interested in training workers for its power plants, a manufacturer of medical devices and pest-control firm Orkin.

Orkin, for example, has hired Stone's firm to create training simulations, which might involve inspecting a house for moisture and heat sources or mixing chemicals and loading them onto a truck.

"This isn't the kind of technology, or model, that this industry -- or Orkin -- is used to considering," notes David Lamb, Orkin's vice president of learning and media services.

Spout Off

Good morning, spouters. Have you read the bottom of your Post Office receipt? There is a Website for a poll to comment on your "recent postal experience," positive or negative. I have enjoyed the ability to compliment, or when necessary, to comment on less than stellar service. The pen is mightier than the sword. —Cape May County *** I would like to say 'thank you to each and every person who works for Fare Free. What a wonderful group they are. Office workers cannot be nicer and bus drivers help all the aged with their bundles and seat belts etc. No other place or city caters so to one and all. I hope and pray that all of you receive this gift with appreciation. —North Wildwood *** To the spouter who is confused about the policy of the lifeguards in the Cove calling people out of the water at 5:25 p.m.: We signal all bathers and surfers with whistles from in front of our equipment storage area under the pavilion when it is 5:30 p.m.
