Latest recalls include reason to quit smoking

OTTAWA -- Nissan is giving smokers another reason to quit.

The Japanese carmaker is recalling nearly 10,000 Altimas after the discovery that hot ash from cigarettes can get into air filters on 2007 models and cause a fire.

Dealers will install filters with improved fire resistance. In addition, a deflector will be installed in front of the air-intake opening to keep out debris.

- A faulty clip inside manual transmissions on some older model Suzuki Aerios can lead to transmission failure and potential crashes, prompting Suzuki to recall about 5,000 of the cars. The clip secures the gearshift cable to the shift lever and can break during the shift to first gear. Transport Canada says the problem is confined to 2002-06 vehicles. Dealers will installed improved clips.

Autovations: The Toyota Tundra

More Americans own full-size trucks than need them. All that bulk and latent utility! A ride as high as a lifeguard chair! Ford's F150 ruled the hill for years. GM's Sierra/Silverado has devotees. But Toyota's been chipping away at the market. And its big, redesigned 2007 Tundra – the top-end model has a 5.7-liter V8 with an aluminum block and head (cast and assembled in the US) – matches its competitors in most categories and beats them in a few, including (by a slim margin) estimated m.p.g.

The model we tested (optioned up to about $40,000) had the voluminous Crew Max cab. That configuration borrows from bed length, and it felt odd having to go diagonal with a 9-ft. rug. (The smaller Double Cab offers a longer bed, at 97.6 in.)

Tundra is refined, from transmission – a very smooth six-speed automatic – through interior appointments.

XtremeMac InCharge Auto iPhone / iPod Car Charger

The iPhone has been on the market for a little over one month now, which means that the accessories are starting to pour in. The first iPhone accessory that I'm going to tell you about is XtremeMac's InCharge Auto car charger.

This product is available in both Black and White versions. In addition to the iPhone, this charger will also work with iPods that have the universal dock connector. Let's take a closer look.

This product is comprised of two parts. A bullet shaped adapter that plugs into your vehicle's 12V power adapter (cigarette lighter) and a 60" inch long USB cable that has an iPod universal connector on one end.

The other end of the USB cable has a standard USB connector on it that plugs into the adapter.

This is the first of occasional snapshots taken “on the road" — from Frederick to Baltimore, Washington D.C. — and sometimes beyond.

Show manager Bill Thompson said I had five minutes. We hustled past a line of fans with blue bracelets (apparently they'd won a contest) waiting to meet Live, the York, Pa.-bred rockers. They're touring minor league ballparks with Collective Soul and the Counting Crows and played Frederick's Harry Grove Stadium last week.

Live frontman Ed Kowalczyk met us between two buses behind the rightfield wall. Dark, loud from idling engines, choking on black exhaust fumes, he suggested a quieter place for the interview. Walking toward an open patch of grass, Thompson reminded us, “five minutes." The lead singer seemed unhurried. Shirtless, sweaty, and sober, he looked as relaxed as any 30-something guy stepping off the court after a couple games of pick-up basketball.

Heat wave: A major summer killer

Heat kills by taxing the human body beyond its abilities. In a normal year, about 175 Americans succumb to the demands of summer heat.Among the large continental family of natural hazards, only the cold of winter--not lightning, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, or earthquakes--takes a greater toll. From 1936 through 1975, nearly 20,000 people were killed in the United States by the effects of heat and solar radiation. In the disastrous heat wave of 1980, more than 1,250 people died. And these are the direct casualties. No one can know how many more deaths are advanced by heat waves or how many diseased or aging hearts surrender that under better conditions would have continued functioning.North American summers are hot; most summers see heat waves in one section or another of the United States.
