Do you have a toy on the recent recall list by Mattel? See complete list
Mattel Inc. issued recall for about 9 million Chinese-made toys. WASHINGTON Toy-making giant Mattel Inc. issued recalls Tuesday for about 9 million Chinese-made toys that contain magnets children can swallow or which could have lead paint. The recall includes 7.3 million play sets, including Polly Pocket dolls and Batman action figures, and 253,000 die cast cars that contain lead paint. Nancy A. Nord, acting Consumer Product Safety Commission chairman, told a news conference no injuries had been reported with any of the products involved in the new recall. The scope of these recalls is intentionally large to prevent any injuries from occurring, she told the news conference. At least one U.S. child has died and 19 others have needed surgery since 2003 after swallowing magnets used in toys, the government said.
The flight of the godwits
Next time someone complains about a long-haul flight to some far-flung part of the globe, tell them the story of the bar-tailed godwit. Each year, before the Alaskan tundra starts to freeze, most of these medium-sized wader birds set off on an incredible journey that sees them fly non-stop to New Zealand. They cover a breathtaking 12,000km in seven to nine days - all without snacks, drinks, in-flight entertainment or frequent flyer miles. To help comprehend the time these birds are airborne, imagine a bird taking off when you leave for work on Monday morning. Now picture it still being in the air when you head back to work the following week. It is a feat of endurance that makes the efforts of even ironmen Nathan Fa'avae and Steve Gurney seem mundane. If a human could cover a comparable distance, it would mean running faster than 70kmh for seven days without a break.
Farm tour: Drought on minds of 'dirt people'
Marcus Harward, who markets area livestock, likes to say there are two kinds of folks on this earth: dirt people and concrete people. The annual Rowan County Agriculture Tour offers a chance for the dirt people to educate the concrete people. And so they did Friday at five different stops. The event was sponsored by the N.C. State Cooperative Extension and the Rowan County Chamber of Commerce. Friday's main message, as if the 30-plus tour participants hadn't heard: There's a severe drought in Rowan County, and it's hurting crop yields, challenging the production of dairy cows and affecting the bottom line of farmers across the board. "We got one the heat and the drought are here," Mount Ulla dairy farmer Johnny Moore confirmed. At Correll Farms in Woodleaf, as the air-conditioned tour bus lurched down a dirt road toward a tomato field, David Correll couldn't help but mention the soybeans below the windows of the bus.
Durham Man Charged in Avalon Nightclub Slaying
A Durham man faces a murder charge in a shooting outside a Chapel Hill nightclub last year, though authorities believe someone else pulled the trigger, police said Thursday. Chapel Hill police said they had picked up Willie James Mayo, Jr., 28, of 910 Cartman St. in Durham, with help from the Durham County Sheriff's Office. They charged Mayo with first-degree murder and accessory after the fact in the shooting of Kedrain Monta Swann of Chapel Hill. Mayo was being held without bail in the Orange County Jail. Swann was shot 12 times with a high-powered rifle outside Club Avalon on July 29, 2006, after an altercation inside the club, police said. He died at a local hospital. Town officials later forced the nightclub to close, citing a "grave safety risk" to nearby residents.
New Benz C-Class exudes maturity
New Mercedes Benz C-Class is breathtakingly luxurious and can be purchased with the new AMG body kit. Steve Dlamini-Kabini drove the new machine at its launch in Mpumalanga this week and was impressed. THE fourth-generation Mercedes-Benz C-Class, launched this week in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, is a vehicle perfectly built by South Africans. Sleek, smooth, gorgeous and intelligently resembling its eldest sibling, the flagship S-Class, the new model could be dubbed the "baby S-Class". It is basically a short-wheelbase version of the S-Class with the major difference being that the C-Class is sportier, compact and locally produced at Mercedes-Benz's Port Elizabeth plant in the Eastern Cape. Compared to the generation it replaces, the new C-Class has grown and matured - it is wider, longer, lighter and even bigger with ample cabin space for all occupants.
