| ROSEN: Stop slurring your words!
Trill your R's and start your tone high, swooping down to the accent. The only problem is where to put that accent: Who would expect TeROLdego, GarGANega, MalvaSIa? There are a few phantom letters, like the "H" in Falanghina (fah-lahn-GEE-na) and the "G" in Aglianico (ahl-YAH-ni-co). "I" is generally there to soften "C" or "G," not to be pronounced. As in Gioia (JOY-a) and Recioto (reh-CHOT-o). German is impossible to pronounce. Nevertheless, it helps to know that "V" is pronounced "F," as in Veltliner (felt-LEE-ner), and "W" is pronounced "V" as in Zweigelt (TSVAI-gelt). Then there are those two dots, the umlaut, which tells you to treat a nice rounded letter like "o" or "u" as if you were picking up a handkerchief filled with someone else's sneeze matter. Examples: Grüner (GREEUW- ner) and Müller (MYEW-luhr).
Grease power hits the road
WELLESLEY -- Michael Cohen is a senior marketing associate for a Fortune 500 company, who lives in a brick and green-clapboard house on a tree-lined lane called Bluebird Road. There are golf clubs in his garage and a gold-tone Mercedes in the driveway. Both his hair and lawn are impeccably trimmed. Yet while he seems about as counterculture as a Land's End catalog, Cohen can boast of something that would turn even a Birkenstock-clad environmental activist chartreuse with envy. The 44-year-old restaurant supply salesman has nearly achieved a "closed loop" for his personal and business energy consumption, at least as far as transportation is concerned. The last time he visited a gas station? Two months ago, when he purchased a summer's supply of fuel (worth less than $10) for his lawn mower.
Several U.S. cities telling bikers to shush
MILWAUKEE - Cities from New York to Denver are giving motorcyclists the silent treatment. And that worries riders rights groups, which fear that a wave of ordinances aimed at muffling Harley-Davidsons, hushing Hondas and stifling Suzukis will create a confusing patchwork of laws that motorcyclists won't be able to navigate. The motorcycle industry is concerned it could turn these frustrated riders away. "From our perspective, this creates enormous problems for us because people notice the one motorcycle that makes a lot of noise," said Bill Wood, spokesman for the American Motorcyclist Association. "They don't notice the 50 that pass that don't. So there's a perception that motorcycles are noisy." Ordinances come in many forms. Some are against certain types of products - such as mufflers that would rattle the apples off trees - while others are aimed more at the intent of the driver, who may want to turn some heads or rile up the neighbors on a Sunday afternoon.

Four arrested in connection with four-wheeler theft
After a month-long of investigation by Webster and Claiborne Parish detectives, four people have been arrested in connection to the July 7 theft of a pricey ATV on Old Arcadia Road. On July 7, Claiborne Parish authorities were called to the 2700 block of Old Arcadia Road in reference to the theft of a 2007 Yamaha Ducks Unlimited four-wheeler, with a value of approximately $9,500. Following the theft, Ron Flurry, the rightful owner of the all terrain vehicle (ATV), placed award posters around the Minden area for information leading to the return of the four-wheeler. Claiborne Parish detectives contacted Webster Parish detectives and told them that the ATV was believed to be located in the 200 block of Mullens Street "Myself, two detectives from Claiborne Parish and Captain Steve Cropper made contact with Wallace Johnson III at the suspected address," Webster Parish Detective Barry James said.

Study finds number of brain tumors at hall coincidence
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - The number of brain tumors reported by employees at Wescoe Hall on the University of Kansas campus is a coincidence that was not caused by the hall's inadequate air-handling system, a study concluded.Employees said at least five people who work in the building have been diagnosed with brain tumors in the past eight years."The cause of the brain tumors is unknown," said Dr. John Neuberger, epidemiologist at the university's School of Medicine.Neuberger led a team of researchers who spent a year trying to determine if the 34-year-old building posed health risks. A 21-page report on their efforts was released Friday when Neuberger and other research team members met with about a dozen current and former staff members from Wescoe. The study recommended that the building's air-handling systems be replaced.
